Covid-19 Cases Kenya 11th May 2020

by Dr Richard Ayah

There were 28 new cases diagnosed today from 841 tests done. The total number of Covid positive cases is now 700, with 33 people having died, a crude death rate of 4.7%. The number of people discharged are 251, so there are 416 persons admitted as Covid-19 patients across the country.

Covid-19 Cases by County

When the cases are disaggregated by county, Nairobi (54%) and Mombasa (34%) make up the majority of cases. This is partly a reflection of the initial mode of entry of Covid-19 through the airport and seaport, partly a reflection of where testing is taking place. With the government now testing along the transport corridor, cases are beginning to appear in Busia and Kajiado.

Adapted from Ministry of Health data

When County prevalence data is analysed on a per capita basis, then Mombasa County with a population just over 25% of Nairobi County has a Covid-19 burden that is twice that of the capital. This has implications for individual county health system capacity and ability to cope with an increase in number of cases.
